About

Calypso Canvas & Sail

Calypso Canvas & Sail is a family-owned upholstery and sail shop operating in Key Largo since 2006. Our core mission is straightforward: create durable, attractive, and functional canvas and upholstery solutions that stand up to marine conditions while reflecting each owner’s style and needs. Over nearly two decades we have built trust with local boatowners, fishermen, marinas, and waterfront businesses by delivering precise fit, durable materials, and responsive service.

Our Story and Community Roots

Founded in 2006, Calypso Canvas & Sail began as a small repair shop focused on basic canvas patchwork and upholstery updates. As demand for higher-quality, custom work grew, we invested in expanded shop space, skilled technicians, and training on the latest marine fabrics and techniques. Today our team blends traditional sewing and templating skills with modern materials knowledge to service everything from small tenders to large yachts.

We are proud to serve boat owners, charter operations, marinas, and waterfront homeowners throughout the Florida Keys. Our clients value local expertise, transparent pricing, and the ability to handle complex, one-off requests that many national chains cannot.

Our Team and Craftsmanship

Every member of our shop shares a love of the water and years of hands-on experience in marine canvas, upholstery, and sail repair. Our technicians are trained in:

  • Marine-grade sewing and heavy-duty stitching
  • Template creation and precise measurement systems
  • Foam selection and cushion restoration
  • Strataglass installation and reinforcement
  • Corrosion-resistant hardware installation
  • Sail repair techniques including patching and seam re-stitching

We emphasize ongoing training so our team stays current with new fabric technologies, hardware systems, and protective treatments.

Sustainability and Responsible Materials

We prioritize materials that require less chemical treatment and last longer to reduce waste. Using durable marine-grade fabrics and hardware avoids frequent replacements and reduces the environmental impact associated with disposables. When replacing foam and fabrics, we handle materials responsibly and advise on end-of-life options.

Community Involvement

As local business owners, we support boating safety programs, marina clean-ups, and community events in the Keys. We believe in giving back to the community that supports us and helping new boat owners learn about proper canvas care, maintenance, and storage practices. We are the main source for sail repairs and restitches at the Boy Scouts' National Camp in Islamorado, Florida. Calypso Canvas has and always will provide gift certificates to local charities and fundraising campaigns as donations and raffles.

FAQs

  • Do you work on all boat makes and models?

Yes. Our templating and custom fabrication processes allow us to work with any make or model—powerboats, center consoles, sailboats, yachts, and tenders.

  • What materials do you recommend for boat covers in the Keys?

For long-term UV resistance and breathability, Sunbrella and similar acrylic fabrics are ideal. For clear enclosures, high-clarity Strataglass with proper reinforcement is standard. We’ll recommend materials based on whether the cover is for storage, active use, or display.

  • How long will my upholstery last?

With proper materials and care, marine upholstery can last many years. Sun exposure, maintenance frequency, and how often the boat is used influence longevity. Regular cleaning and protective covers significantly extend life.

  • Can you repair a torn sail or canvas onboard?

Yes. For many repairs we can perform on-site to minimize downtime. For more extensive sail repairs, we may bring the sail to our shop for full restoration.

  • What warranty do you offer?

Our warranty varies by project and materials used; we provide clear warranty details in your estimate. Generally, we stand behind our workmanship and materials and will address issues promptly.
